Stefan Sagmeister has issued a Design Challenge for all RIT students–ACCEPT THE CHALLENGE!
In early summer 2009, a group of faculty from several departments at RIT and Dumbwaiter Design, LLC
met to discuss imaginative ways that RIT students might respond to--"move, and be moved" — by the
visionary Stefan Sagmeister. Stefan had been in contact with our Gannett Project's Working Group
from his experimental outpost in Bali during a year when he accepted no commercial clients. The
design challenge figures vividly in his own life and work. On a tiny handwritten slip of paper, "things to do before I die,"
included in his book Sagmeister: Made You Look, we find precisely the passion, the commitment and many
stories about his challenge which has now been issued to all of us at RIT:
"TOUCH SOMEBODY'S HEART with GRAPHIC DESIGN"
That "somebody" can be a single person, or a small group that is part of RIT. The process and media
to be used is up to the entrant, the outcome is not: that person or group will need to be touched.
The touching should be done with a piece of design. The project should displayed on the morning of October 5.
